Ingredients

  • 1 cup Bahamian yellow grits can be substituted with regular yellow corn grits if unavailable
  • 5 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp butter optional for added richness
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Boil Water: Bring 5 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan. If using milk, substitute 1 cup of water with milk and bring to a boil.
  • Add Grits: Gradually stir the yellow grits into the boiling water. Stir continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
  • Season: Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the mixture. Continue stirring.
  • Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan. Allow the grits to simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. The grits should be thick and creamy.
  • Optional Add-ins: For creamier grits, stir in 1 tablespoon of butter. Adjust salt and add black pepper to taste.
  • Serve: Serve the Bahamian yellow grits hot as a side dish. They pair perfectly with Bahamian steamed fish, sardines, or your favorite breakfast protein.

Notes

Tips:
  • For a richer flavor, consider using chicken broth instead of water.
  • Stir frequently to ensure a smooth consistency and prevent burning.
